Russian-Mali Consultations on the Combating
of International Terrorism
Anatoly Safonov, Special Presidential Representative for International Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism and Cross-Border Organized Crime, on January 25-28 held in Bamako consultations with the Mali side on antiterrorist themes.
His meetings with the President of the Republic of Mali and senior officials from security structures and the Foreign Ministry have shown that the two sides have common approaches to the problems in counteraction against international terrorism in all its manifestations. The Mali highly assessed the Russian Federation's contribution to intensifying the antiterrorist struggle, and its activity as the Chairman of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee.
The conversations have demonstrated a mutual interest in arranging effective cooperation on this front. Considering that by virtue of its geographical position the Republic of Mali has become a kind of "transshipment point" for illegal migration from a number of other countries to Europe, for drug traffic and for illegal arms trade, which causes the special concern of the Mali side, a frank and keen discussion of specific forms of interaction in the antiterrorist sphere took place.
A complex of issues relating to the state of, and prospects for Russian-Mali relations in various fields, including an expansion of the political dialogue and the intensification of trade-and-economic ties, also was discussed.
Agreement was reached in principle on the signing of a Memorandum on Coordination and Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism, the Russian draft of which was handed over for consideration to the Mali side.
