Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuri Fedotov Meets with Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

On October 11, during a visit to Nigeria, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Yuri Fedotov held a meeting with Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States Mohamed Ibn Chambas. The interlocutors exchanged views on a number of pressing international, including African problems. They focused mainly on the prospects for normalizing the situation in the hot spots of the West African region and on conflict prevention and post-conflict settlement.

The ECOWAS Executive Secretary highly assessed the role of Russia as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and as a participant in the Group of Eight in developing partner relations with the countries of Africa, and noted its weighty contribution to the political resolution of crisis situations on the continent.

There was reaffirmed on the Russian side a principled interest in expanding and concretizing multifarious cooperation with ECOWAS and intensifying the political dialogue with this influential regional organization.
