Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Meets with Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, the Sudanese President's Special Representative in Darfur

On October 5 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov received the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Sudan in Darfur, Sudanese Interior Minister Major General Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, who had arrived in Moscow for a brief working visit. The Sudanese emissary delivered a message from Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

During the conversation, Lavrov and Hussein discussed the problem of Darfur, in particular, in the context of the international community's efforts to resolve the crisis in this West Sudanese province and to improve the humanitarian situation there. Opinion was expressed in favor of continuing an active search for a resolution of this conflict by political means, including in cooperation with the African Union.

Questions pertaining to the development of Russian-Sudanese relations in various fields were also discussed from the viewpoint of the importance of building up trade-and-economic cooperation between the two countries.
