Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Meets with Abdelaziz Belkhadem, Minister of State and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Algeria
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, on September 20, in New York, on the fringes of the 59th session of the UN General Assembly, had a conversation with Abdelaziz Belkhadem, Minister of State and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The Algerian minister expressed solidarity with Russia and deeply-felt condolences over the victims of the terrorist act in Beslan.
There was declared on both sides the focus on strengthening and developing further the traditional friendly relations between Russia and Algeria on the firm basis of the Declaration on Strategic Partnership, signed during the visit of the President of the PDRA, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to Moscow in 2001. In this context the urgency was noted of carrying out a number of joint Russian-Algerian events, including an exchange of visits at the heads of foreign affairs agencies level in the interest of promoting specific areas of bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation.
Lavrov and Belkhadem stated the identity or similarity of the positions of Russia and Algeria on key global and regional issues, primarily on the problems of the fight against international terrorism, of the settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict and of the situation in Iraq.
The ministers agreed to continue political cooperation and the coordination of approaches, including within the Security Council of the United Nations, of which Algeria is currently a nonpermanent member.
