Consultations Held at Russian MFA with Winston Tubman, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Somalia
On September 13 consultations were held at the Russian MFA with the visiting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Somalia, Winston Tubman.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov received the high UN emissary. Tubman also had talks with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuri Fedotov.
It was stressed that the swearing in this past August in Kenya of the members of the Transitional Federal Parliament of Somalia had opened an important chapter in the process of Somali settlement. The sides expressed the hope that this event would give impetus to multilateral efforts for the earliest possible stabilization in Somalia. In this context the Russian side voiced support for the efforts of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and leaders of African states and the African Union in establishing favorable external conditions for overcoming the protracted conflict in Somalia, rendering assistance in the area of post-conflict reconstruction and development and normalizing the humanitarian situation.
Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and as a participant of the IGAD Partners Forum will continue making its contribution to achieving a comprehensive political settlement and restoring the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, and will be ready to lend necessary assistance to this state with the stabilization of the situation there.
