In Relation to the Adoption by UN Security Council of a Resolution on Sudan
On June 11, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 1547 welcoming the proposal of the UN Secretary General to deploy in the Sudan an advance team for an initial period of three months for the preparation of a full-scale UN operation in that country after the signing of a Peace Agreement. The conflicting parties are being urged to conclude that agreement as soon as possible. The resolution also contains an appeal to the sides involved in the conflict in the Sudanese province of Darfur to immediately conclude a political agreement with the aim of a peaceful resolution of the crisis in this region.
Moscow welcomes the adoption of resolution 1547 as an important step in support of the process of peaceful settlement in the Sudan. Russia will continue to actively contribute to achieving this goal and to support the efforts of the Security Council and the entire international community in this direction.
