2490-24-11-05

On November 23, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov visited the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria as part of his North African tour. He had conversations with the DPRA President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and with the Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Bajawi.

There were substantively discussed at the talks some key international and regional issues, the examination of which has borne out the identity or similarity of the two countries' positions, as well as the state of affairs in bilateral cooperation and practical steps for its further development.

The sides spoke in favor of the building up of collective efforts by the international community to counter new challenges and threats, primarily in the struggle against terrorism.

There was expressed firm support for the establishment of a lasting, just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and for the Quartet's activities and the importance was emphasized of further strengthening the coordination of actions between Russia and Algeria in the Middle East sector.

In considering Western Sahara settlement problems the sides spoke in favor of continuing the search under the aegis of the UN for a just, long-term and mutually acceptable political resolution of this dispute.

The exchange of views on the situation in Iraq and in the Mediterranean, on the state of affairs in Africa and on other regional problems has shown the consonance of the two sides' approaches in support of political settlement in the name of the preservation of international and regional stability.

Priority attention was devoted to a comprehensive discussion of the prospects for improving Russian-Algerian political engagement, for building up mutually beneficial bilateral economic cooperation and for filling the Declaration on Strategic Partnership, signed between the two countries in April 2001, with specific and weighty content. In this context the sides expressed satisfaction with the launching of the mechanism of the work of the Russian-Algerian Mixed Intergovernmental Commission on Trade-and-Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation.
