Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Comments on Interfax Question Regarding Judicial Investigation of the Case of Russian Sailors of African Pride Tanker Detained in Nigeria
Question: How could you comment on reports about another postponement of the Nigerian court hearings on the case of Russian sailors?
Comment: The latest hearings at the Federal Court of Lagos on the case of the Russian sailors who are crew members of the African Pride tanker and who are charged with smuggling crude oil took place on October 31. According to the Russian Embassy in Nigeria, the substance of the case was not examined at the hearing because of an earlier submission from the Attorney General's Office to the appellate court for a revision of the wording of the indictment.
The appellate court was originally expected to consider the submission in December this year, but now the court hearing has been moved to November 21, 2005. In view of that the next Federal Court hearing has been scheduled for November 29, 2005.
