Situation in Sudan

1670-02-08-2005

According to incoming reports from Sudan, riots have occurred in Khartoum and a number of other cities of the country. There are casualties, material damage has been caused. The Russian embassy in Khartoum has reported that there are no Russian citizens among the victims.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is closely watching developments in Sudan. It is important that the tragic death of John Garang should not lead to an aggravation of the already not simple situation in the country and that it does not hurt the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to settle the North-South relations, signed at the beginning of this year.

Russia has been a consistent advocate of the establishment of calm and stability on Sudanese soil and a search for political solutions to complicated contradictions within Sudan. We expect that the dynamism of peaceful transformations in Sudan will continue under the new southern Sudanese leadership as well.
