Russian Ambassador to Nigeria Igor Melikov, State Duma Deputy Vladimir Vasiliev Meet with Nigerian Minister of Justice and Attorney General Bayo Ojo

1618-21-07-2005

On July 20 Russian Ambassador to Nigeria Igor Melikov and State Duma Deputy Vladimir Vasiliev, who is currently visiting Lagos, met with the country's newly appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Bayo Ojo.

In the course of the conversation, in particular, the situation around the Russian seamen being charged with "oil contraband" was discussed. It was noted that the stalling trial of possibly innocent people, which has been deferred continuously for 1.5 years now, directly points toward the lack of strong incriminatory evidence. There was accentuated the necessity to unblock the case's hearing in a federal court, Lagos, and to bring forward the court sitting from October 21 to an earlier date.

The minister promised support "within legality" and gave an assurance that Nigeria treats with a feeling of respect and sympathy Russia and its people.
