Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov sends letter to Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Oluyemi Adeniji over situation around Russian citizens in Nigeria
Continuing in Nigeria for almost two years now, the trial of the Russian crew members of the African Pride tanker on July 14 was once again deferred, now until October 21. The absence of any shifts in the dragged-out "case" has compelled Moscow to once more address the Nigerian authorities directly.
Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov sent his Nigerian counterpart a letter qualifying the situation as dramatic. The problem of the two-year detention of the Russian citizens in severe prison conditions on a charge of oil contraband, the involvement in which has not been established, is acquiring an increasingly negative political resonance and does not contribute to the creation of a favorable atmosphere for Russian-Nigerian cooperation, says the letter. Moscow hopes for the Nigerian side to take all necessary measures to finish an objective trial of the Russian citizens as soon as possible.
