Russian-Egyptian Consultations

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Saltanov stayed in the Arab Republic of Egypt on May 22-24. He met with ARE Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to whom he conveyed an oral message from Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov, and with Secretary General of the League of Arab States Amr Moussa.

Saltanov's consultations with Ashraf Rashed, ARE Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, took place in the framework of the bilateral High-Level Working Committee, the agreement on the creation of which is fixed in the Joint Statement on the Further Deepening of Friendly Relations and Partnership Between the Russian Federation and the Arab Republic of Egypt, adopted at the end of Vladimir Putin's visit to Cairo this past April.

The main attention in the course of the contacts was paid to Middle Eastern problems, particularly Palestinian-Israeli settlement, and the situation around Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. A discussion of conditions on the African continent, including settlement in Sudan and the state of things in Darfur, figured prominently.

An exchange of views on topical issues in bilateral relations in the light of the practical implementation of the agreements reached in the course of Russian President Putin's visit to Cairo also took place.

It was agreed to continue consultations under the auspices of he Working Committee on a regular basis. It was acknowledged that this mechanism is very important for the maintenance and further reinforcement of the confidential political dialogue existing between Russia and Egypt.
