RUSSIA SUPPORTS MAJOR UN OPERATION IN DARFUR - OFFICIAL
MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - Russia supports a major UN operation in Darfur, but has refrained from commenting on proposed sanctions to stop the violence in the war-ridden Sudanese province.
The latest report of the UN secretary general on Sudan and a possible Security Council resolution are being discussed, Deputy Foreign Ministry Yury Fedotov told Interfax on Wednesday.
"The possibility of launching a major UN operation to help settle the problem of Darfur" is in question, he said. "In our opinion, this would be an adequate move by the international community in the present conditions," he said.
Asked about Russia's attitude to the sanctions proposed by the authors of the draft resolution, Fedotov said: "As for other proposals, they are also being discussed, but it is premature to say what the final decision of the Security Council will be."
