Russian First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valery Loshchinin Meets with Abubakar Tanko, Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs

On December 7 First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Valery Loshchinin received Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Abubakar Tanko, who is in Moscow to attend the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Nigerian Mixed Commission on Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation, in which he heads the Nigerian part.

In the course of the conversation a broad range of issues in relations between the two countries was discussed. There was reaffirmed the mutual striving for their further development. The sides expressed satisfaction with the holding in the Russian capital on December 7-8 of the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, called upon to help intensify Russian-Nigerian cooperation in the trade, economic, scientific and technical fields.

Concern also was expressed over the protracted legal proceedings in the case of the twelve Russian seamen arrested in Nigeria and the conditions of their prison detention, and hope was voiced that the Nigerian side would take necessary measures for a speedy and unbiased trial and the return of the Russian citizens home.

Igor Melikhov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Nigeria, and Dan Suleiman, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Russia, were present at the conversation.
