Transcript of Replies to Media Questions by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov, Maastricht, December 1, 2003
Question: Russian President Putin signed a decree to send a Russian peacekeeping contingent to Liberia. Can you comment on the issue?
Foreign Minister Ivanov: Russia is participating in a whole variety of peacekeeping operations which are being carried out in accordance with UN Security Council decisions. We as a permanent UNSC member bear special responsibility for the maintenance of peace, and in the conflict situations where Russia can make its contribution it does so. Our contingent recently took part in a peacekeeping operation in Sierra Leone. The actions of our peacekeepers were highly assessed. Now we are confident that our peacekeepers as always will worthily fulfill their international mission.
