Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov Holds Talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Tanzania Jakay Kikwete

On July 18 Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Tanzania Jakay Kikwete, staying on an official visit to Moscow.

During the talk, the sides discussed a broad range of pressing international problems and major developments in the world in the context of new global challenges and threats.

The ministers analyzed the questions of shaping a democratic world pattern, ensuring strategic stability in the world and combating international terrorism. Figuring prominently in their talks was the enhancement of the role of international organizations, primarily the United Nations, in terms of the mobilization of the efforts of states in the accomplishment of these tasks. Also an exchange of views on the situation in Palestinian-Israeli settlement and around Iraq took place.

The sides reaffirmed the importance of promoting stability in Africa, deepening political and economic integration on the continent and raising the effectiveness of the participation in these processes of the African Union and sub-regional organizations, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The ministers touched upon a range of problems relating to the search of ways to settle conflicts and crises on the African continent that are still a serious obstacle to tackling the tasks of political, economic and social development of African countries.

In the course of the talks the question of ensuring the sustainable development of African countries, and the progress in implementing the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) program were considered. Russia's line of support for NEPAD was stressed and the intention to work jointly with the representatives of the G8 member countries and of international organizations on devising mechanisms for its implementation was reiterated.

The ministers substantively discussed the state of, and ways for the stimulation of bilateral cooperation in various fields. Special attention was devoted to questions of deepening mutually beneficial ties in the trade-and-economic field and to developing the juridical base of Russian-Tanzanian relations.
