Regarding Growth of Tensions in Cote d'Ivoire

Russia is concerned by the growth of tensions in Cote d'Ivoire. We continue to closely follow the attempts to unblock the situation being made by African countries in the first place. We see no alternative to a comprehensive political resolution of the present crisis.

From this point of view we regard positively the outcome of the extraordinary summit held in Dakar, Senegal, of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS), which adopted a decision to deploy in Cote d'Ivoire until December 31, 2002, a peacekeeping force of the member states of this organization. We express hope that the negotiating process within the framework of ECOWAS will help avoid a civil war in the country.

Russia, a consistent advocate of a peaceful resolution of the Ivorian conflict, will continue to make its positive contribution, including in the UN, to normalizing the situation in Cote d'Ivoire.
