On Reversal of Russian Citizens' Death Sentence in Tanzania
On November 18 Amani Karume, the President of Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, "taking into account the traditionally friendly character of Russian-Tanzanian relations," adopted a decision to reverse the death sentence earlier passed by a Zanzibar court on Russian citizens I. S. Ochirov and D. A. Kosyakov, and to commute it to life imprisonment. That step had become possible thanks largely to long and purposeful efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Russian Embassy in Dar Es Salaam.
Simultaneously Tanzanian authorities declared readiness to hand over the convicts to Russia for execution of the sentence.
Moscow is expressing deep satisfaction with the humane act of the President of Zanzibar.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with competent Russian organizations will continue to render the necessary assistance to the compatriots in prison.
