Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Saltanov Meets with Egyptian Ambassador to Moscow Rauf Saad

On November 22 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Saltanov received Rauf Saad, the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Moscow.

During the talk, Saltanov reaffirmed that it was thanks to the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1441 that it had been possible to ward off the direct threat of a military strike at Iraq and to preserve the prospect for the further search of ways for a politico-diplomatic settlement of the Iraqi problem. The main thing now, as was noted, is to ensure the objective and unbiased character of the work of international inspectors and the appropriate cooperability of Baghdad in closing the existing questions in the disarmament dossier.

The interlocutors expressed profound concern over the persisting confrontation between the Palestinians and Israelis and spoke up for continued efforts by the international community, and primarily the Quartet of international mediators on the Middle East, aimed at finding a way out of the current stalemate situation and promoting a settlement that would meet the interests of both sides.

Topical issues in bilateral relations were also discussed.
