On the Consideration in UN Security Council of the Situation in DRC

     2152-21-10-2002

Following the recent armed clashes of units of ethnic groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the UN Security Council has adopted an official statement of its President with an evaluation of the developments.

The parties to the conflict are being urged to at once cease the hostilities without any additional conditions, and the Government of the DRC and all the other countries of the region - to use their influence to ensure this task and refrain from any actions which could aggravate the situation and undermine the peace process.

The statement also underlines the necessity of ending all the forms of aid to the armed groups participating in combat actions in the DRC.

It welcomes the progress in the withdrawal of foreign troops from the territory of the DRC and contains an appeal to the conflict parties to comply with all the relevant agreements and the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Having actively supported the adoption of this statement of the President of the Security Council, the Russian Federation for its part will continue to render constructive assistance to the peace process in the Great Lakes region.
