On Economic Community for West African States Extraordinary Summit

     1966-01-10-2002

Resolving the situation in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire (RCI), which became exacerbated on September 19 as the result of an armed rebellion in the army, was the objective of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS; incorporates 15 countries) Extraordinary Summit held in Accra, Ghana, on September 29. The participants in the meeting reaffirmed the stand of ECOWAS on the unacceptability of an unconstitutional change of power in the member states of this organization and adopted a decision to establish a mediatory mission consisting of Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Togo to seek a formula for a political unblocking of the crisis.

We hope that the results of the summit will yield a positive effect.

As the Russian embassy in the RCI has confirmed, all the Russian citizens have by now been evacuated from the city of Bouake, located in the epicenter of the confrontation between government and rebel forces, and are safe in Abidjan.
