PRESS RELEASE
On the Adoption by the UN Security Council of a Resolution on Sierra Leone

     1940-27-09-2002

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution (1436) extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) for another six months, until March 31, 2003.

Members of the Council expressed satisfaction with the improved security situation in Sierra Leone and spoke for the further consolidation of the peace process there with the active participation of the UN.

The Security Council noted the proposals of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for a gradual and phased reconfiguration of UNAMSIL and approved the initial reduction of the UN Mission's military contingent by 4,500 within the next eight months.

Russia for its part will continue to work constructively, including through its practical participation in the activities of UNAMSIL, aimed at solidifying the settlement process and establishing a lasting peace in Sierra Leone.
