STATEMENT BY ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
Commemorating 10th Anniversary of the Signing of the Agreement on Intra-Mozambican Settlement

     1921-26-09-2002

October 4 marks the tenth anniversary of the signing in Rome of the General Peace Agreement for Mozambique, which put an end to the 16-year-old civil war. The cessation of hostilities opened the way for national reconciliation and the construction of a democratic law-governed state in the country.

The settlement process in Mozambique had a pronounced international component. A great contribution to its realization was made by the world community, United Nations and religious circles of a number of countries. Russia also made its contribution. But still, the decisive factor for the attainment of peace was the striving of the entire Mozambican people for stability and calm.

All these years Russia has been following with sympathy and interest the events occurring in friendly Mozambique, and welcomed the political and socioeconomic reforms in the country, aimed at accomplishing the tasks of national revival.

We highly value the level of cooperation with Mozambique in various fields and are confident that the new realities evolving in our states will help impart an additional impetus to the whole range of Russian-Mozambican ties.
