     1960-01-10-2002

On September 30 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Ivanov had a telephone conversation with Abd Shalgam, Secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahirya.

Ivanov and Shalgam discussed the situation that has evolved around Iraq and in the Palestinian territories.

Ivanov informed the head of Libya's foreign affairs agency of the efforts taken by the Russian side toward international inspectors' early return to Iraq and the settlement of the problems by political means on the basis of existing UN Security Council resolutions.

The ministers spoke in favor of the implementation of all the UN Security Council resolutions concerning the overcoming of the present crisis in Palestinian-Israeli relations and the resumption of movement towards a settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. In this context they positively assessed the decision by Israel to withdraw forces from the headquarters of PNA Head Yasser Arafat in Ramallah. It was emphasized that only the reciprocal positive steps of the Israelis and Palestinians could help to normalize the situation around the Palestinian territories and to restore the negotiation process.
