PRESS RELEASE
On the Situation in Cote d'Ivoire

Armed clashes took place on September 19 in a number of cities of the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire (RCI) between servicemen to be demobilized under an army reform program and gendarmes.

According available information, there are casualties, including among the civilian population, as a result of the exchange of fire. The former head of state, Robert Guei, and the interior minister of the RCI were killed. At present the situation in Abidjan is returning to normal. A curfew has been imposed in the city. At the same time clashes between government forces and rebels are continuing in the cities of Bouake and Korhogo (the center and north of the country).

Russia is concerned by the flare of violence in that African country and expresses hope that the lawful government of Cote d'Ivoire will be able to normalize the situation and restore calm and order in the RCI soon.

According to information from the Russian embassy in Abidjan, none of the staff, members of their families or other Russian citizens have suffered in the events.
