Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov Meets with Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem

A meeting took place in New York on September 17 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Ivanov and State Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of the Democratic and Popular Democratic Republic of Algeria Abdelaziz Belkhadem.

In examining topical issues on the agenda of the 57th UN General Assembly, the interlocutors reaffirmed the high degree of mutual understanding and the identity of the two countries' views on the substance and methods of dealing with international problems, including the shaping of an equitable world pattern, with the central role of the UN Security Council in resolving crisis situations and combating international terrorism.

The ministers thoroughly discussed the state of affairs in the Middle East, underscoring the importance of an early unblocking of the crisis situation around the Palestinian territories and the restoration of the political process. The sides were unanimous in the view about the need to resolve the situation around Iraq solely by politico-diplomatic methods in the spirit of the implementation of the appropriate UN Security Council resolutions.

Igor Ivanov and Abdelaziz Belkhadem emphasized that the Russian-Algerian Declaration on Strategic Partnership, signed in Moscow in April 2001, has taken bilateral relations to a new stage. They expressed satisfaction with the level of political dialogue and coordination in international and regional affairs and stated mutual interest in further expanding cooperation between Russia and Algeria in the trade and economic and other fields.
