Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov Meets with the Head of the Libyan Foreign Affairs Agency, Abd Shalgam

     On September 16, in New York, in the course of the 57th session of the UN General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Ivanov had a meeting with the Head of the Libyan Foreign Affairs Agency, Abd Shalgam.

     As part of their thorough exchange of views on topical issues of the international and regional situation, special attention was devoted to the setting in the Middle East and the situation around Iraq.

     The Russian side underscored the importance of continuing the persevering efforts by the world community, primarily the Quartet of international mediators, in favor of an early overcoming of the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation and the restoration of the political process, based on the principles of international law.

     The meeting participants were unanimous in the view about the need to achieve an Iraqi settlement solely by politico-diplomatic methods on the basis of implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

     In discussing questions of Russian-Libyan relations Igor Ivanov and Abd Shalgam expressed mutual interest in further developing the political dialogue between the two countries and expanding mutually beneficial ties in various fields. In this context they noted the importance of intensifying joint work to implement the previously reached agreements and to elaborate new projects and areas of cooperation.
