On Russian-American Africa Consultations

    Russian-American consultations on African problems have taken place at the MFA of Russia. As part of the consultations, a US delegation headed by Charles Snyder, Africa Bureau Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, was received by Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov.

    During the thorough conversations that showed the similarity of many evaluations and approaches, the general situation in Africa, and questions of conflict settlement, the deepening of integration processes in the region, international assistance to the continent's revival, and Russia-USA cooperation on the African track in the UN Security Council, within the framework of the Group of Eight and other international forums, and at the bilateral level were reviewed. Discussions covered such aspects as democratic and economic reforms in the states of the continent, the promotion of regional stability, the formation of an African peacekeeping capability, and the creation of necessary conditions for taking the region onto the road of sustainable development. Much attention was paid to antiterrorist themes.

    Both sides reconfirmed interest in deepening the cooperation in African affairs, including in light of the upcoming discussion of the continent's problems at the G8 summit in Kananaskis, and imparting to the Russian-American exchange of views on Africa a more regular character.
