Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov Speaks to Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Maher by Telephone

A telephone conversation took place on April 17 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Ivanov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Ahmed Maher.

The ministers expressed profound concern at the extremely tense situation in the Palestinian territories. They noted that continued confrontation and violence might lead to grave consequences for the entire region. A further exchange of views on the possibility of convening an international conference which could help restore the negotiation process in the Middle East took place.

Ivanov underscored the necessity to further build up efforts, especially on the part of the international Quartet, to look for ways to get the situation out of the crisis as soon as possible. He also noted the importance of Russian-Egyptian cooperation with a view to achieving normalization in the region.
