On UN Security Council Statement on Ethiopia and Eritrea

The United Nations Security Council under the presidency of Russia has released a statement welcoming the decision of the Boundary Commission announced in The Hague regarding the line of passage of the state boundary between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Members of the SC also welcomed the recognition by the leaderships of both states of this verdict of the international arbitration body as final and binding.

The Security Council called on Addis Ababa and Asmara to closely cooperate with the Boundary Commission and the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) for the purpose of an early and comprehensive implementation of the decision on the border.

Members of the Council pointed out the importance of further strengthening the climate of trust between the two countries, as well as the necessity of solving the issues still outstanding, including release of war prisoners, demining and the ensuring of the freedom of movement of UNMEE staff.

We expect that this statement of the Security Council will effectively help the early normalization of relations and achievement of a final settlement between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
