On the Presidential Elections in Zimbabwe

     314-22-02-2002

Moscow has been closely following the preparation for presidential elections in Zimbabwe, which are scheduled for March 9-10. Several candidates are participating in the election struggle, including the incumbent president, Robert Mugabe, and the leader of the influential opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai.

The Zimbabwean government has invited a number of international, regional and sub-regional organizations, as well as foreign states, including Russia, to send their observers to the elections.

The accommodation of observers from many African and other countries and from such prestigious organizations as the Commonwealth, Organization of African Unity (OAU), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has already begun in Zimbabwe.

We express hope that the election process will be transparent and democratic and will ensure the free expression of the will of the Zimbabwean people.
