     Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Saltanov Meets with Egyptian Ambassador to Moscow Reda Shehata

     On January 29 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Saltanov received the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Moscow, Reda Shehata.

     In discussing the conflict situation in the Middle East, the sides underlined the importance of quickly overcoming the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation and preventing an escalation of tensions in the Israel-Lebanon-Syria triangle. The main objective at this stage is for both parties to implement the Mitchell-Tenet scheme, including a cease-fire, the restoration of trust and a resumption of the negotiation process. The mutual interest of Russia and Egypt in the coordination of effort to get out of the crisis, and restore movement forward to a comprehensive Arab-Israeli settlement based on UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and in line with the Madrid principles was reaffirmed.

     Regarding the situation around Iraq a commitment to the early resolution of the Iraqi problem by politico-diplomatic methods on the basis of the well-known UNSC resolutions was stated.

     Topical questions of bilateral relations, and opportunities for the building-up of the potential of Russian-Egyptian cooperation in the political, economic, and other fields were substantively discussed.
