     Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov's Visit to South Africa


     On December 15-17, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov paid an official visit to the Republic of South Africa.

     The minister was received by South African President Thabo Mbeki, to whom he handed a personal message of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

     During the conversation with President Mbeki, and at the talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a keen exchange of views on a broad range of international-agenda issues and prospects for the further development of bilateral cooperation was held.

     At the end of the visit the sides adopted a joint communique reflecting the onward dynamics of the political cooperation of the two countries in world affairs and recording a mutual striving for the further building-up of bilateral relations in the trade-and-economic, scientific-technical and a number of other fields.

     During the visit the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries initialed a Treaty on Friendship and Partnership Between Russia and the Republic of South Africa, and signed a Protocol on Cooperation in the Fields of Culture and Art for 2002-2004.
