Russian MFA Information and Press Department Commentary Regarding the Signing in Cairo of a Peace Agreement Between the Sudanese Government and the Opposition National Democratic Alliance
A peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the opposition National Democratic Alliance was signed in Cairo on June 18.
In this connection we would like to note that Moscow has always considered and continues to do so that the only path to solving all the conflicts within Sudan lies through peace talks between the opposing parties to reach mutually acceptable political accords.
Therefore we support any dialogue of Sudanese political forces that leads to peace and stabilization in that long-suffering country and to the strengthening of its territorial integrity and sovereignty, of course, with due consideration for the complex ethnic and confessional composition of the population.
Moscow's reaction to news of the Sudanese government signing in Cairo the agreement with the National Democratic Alliance, which is made up of a large number of Sudanese opposition groups, has been positive in this context. We highly evaluate the useful brokering role of Egypt in concluding this agreement. The accords reached are a good addition to the process of pan-Sudanese reconciliation, started by the conclusion in January 2005 of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Center and South Sudan, and to the efforts to end the conflict in Western Sudan's Darfur. Together with other members of the international community Russia will continue actively facilitating a long-term political resolution of the conflict situations in different parts of Sudan.
